Shiraz Table Lamp

A black cylinder base, a brass stem, and a large disc tilted over the top of them. The lamp faces up into the disc and the disc throws the light back down, so you never see the source directly.

It works like a small reflector rather than a shade. The lamp sits in an amber lined cup on a short brass stem, pointing up at the underside of a disc which is angled across the top of the base. All the light bounces off that surface before it reaches the room, which is why it reads as a soft warm wash from a compact lamp. The base is a plain black cylinder, heavy enough to hold the offset weight of the disc, and the flex runs out of the back to a plug.

Where it works: on a bedside table, a home office desk, or a living room shelf where a glare-free lamp is wanted at eye level.

Because the light bounces rather than shines through, the lamp you choose matters less than usual. A small warm lamp kept below the rim of the cup will keep the glow even and the source hidden.
