Qazvin Pendant Light

A brass arm arches out from the ceiling plate, a polished brass ball hangs down one side and an opal glass globe hangs down the other. The weight is the point: slide the globe up or down and it stays where you put it.

The cable runs over the arch like a rope over a pulley, with the ball as the counterbalance, so the drop is set by hand rather than by cutting a flex. Everything structural is brass, kept polished so it reads warm against the glass. The globe is opal, which means the light is spread through the whole sphere instead of showing a hot spot where the lamp sits, and it stays comfortable to look at directly. It is a fitting to hang beside something, over a bedside table or an armchair, rather than centred in a room.

Where it works: beside a bed instead of a table lamp, over a reading corner, or dropped low in a living room next to a chair.
