Rostam Pendant Light

A brass bar carrying ten faceted glass cylinders in a linear row, five standing above the bar and five hanging below it, so light goes up to the ceiling and down to the table at the same time.

Each shade is a short cylinder of thick clear glass, cut into vertical facets that catch the lamp inside and break it into a column of bright lines. Splitting them five up and five down is what makes this different from a normal bar pendant: the upward set washes the ceiling and takes the harshness out of the room, while the downward set does the work over the surface. The bar itself is plain brass, hung on two rigid rods rather than cables so it stays level.

Where it works: along a kitchen island, above a dining table, or in a dining room where a long fitting suits the table better than a round one.
