Neyshabur Wall Light

Two fluted glass cylinders on a slim gold backplate, one aimed at the ceiling and one at the floor, so the wall is washed in both directions.

The pair of cylinders sit nose to nose on a narrow plate, and because one fires up and one fires down the fitting draws two soft cones of light on the wall instead of one flat pool. The glass is fluted the whole way round, which breaks the lamp into a ring of fine highlights rather than a single hot point. Metalwork is a satin gold finish with a stepped collar at each shade, a detail that does more for it than the plain tube it could have been. It is narrow enough to flank a bed or line a hallway.

Where it works: as bedside lighting either side of a bed, along a hallway, or on a living room chimney breast where an up and down wash suits better than a downlight.

There is no cable and no switch, so it needs a supply in the wall and an electrician. Clear lamps show the fluting; frosted ones flatten it.
