Semnan Wall Light

A half-round chrome plate with hundreds of fine chains falling from it in loops, so the lamps behind read as a glow through metal rather than as two bulbs.

The chains are the shade. They hang in swags from the top plate and fall away in tiered layers to a rounded hem, and because each strand is a separate line of polished links the surface shifts as you move past it. Lit, the light escapes between the strands as a soft shimmer with a brighter core behind, so it behaves more like a decorative panel than a reading light. The chrome plate is the only rigid part, which is why the fitting looks heavy and hangs light.

Where it works: a living room chimney breast, a bedroom above a headboard, or a hallway where a flat wall wants something with movement in it.

The supplier gives no projection figure, so if it is going somewhere tight, such as above a mantelpiece, measure the clearance you have before ordering.
