The frame is the design here. Flat black bar stock is bent into angular arms that step outward and upward on two levels, so the lamps sit at different heights rather than in one flat ring, and the whole thing keeps a silhouette from across the room. Brass candle holders break the black up and give the light something warm to sit in. Because the lamps are exposed, the shape of the bulb matters: a round opal golf ball lamp, as photographed, keeps it soft, while a clear filament lamp will make it sharper and brighter. It is a dining table piece rather than a hallway one.

Where it works: over a dining table, in a living room, or in a hallway with the height to take the drop.

Bulbs are not included and this one has a lower ceiling than most eight light fittings, so check what you already own before fitting them.
