A clear glass bell on an antique brass chain, with the lamp left visible inside it, so the bulb you choose is half the fitting.

The glass is clear and unfrosted, straight through the sides and drawn in at the top to a narrow collar where the brass holder sits. Nothing is hidden: the chain, the flex and the lamp are all part of the object, which is why the choice of bulb matters more here than on a shade you cannot see through. A decorative filament lamp reads warm and amber and throws a soft pattern through the glass. A plain opal lamp reads cleaner and brighter. It is big enough to hang alone over a small table or in a row of three over an island.

Where it works: over a dining table or a kitchen island, singly or in a row, or in a hallway where the drop can be seen against a plain wall.
