A stoneware lamp base with a reactive glaze that breaks from a greige shoulder into streaks over a cream body, sold without a shade.

Reactive glaze is glaze that moves in the kiln, so the band around the shoulder runs down into the cream below in fine vertical streaks and stops in a different place on every piece. That is why two of these never match, and it is the whole reason to buy a plain cylinder base rather than a printed one. The body is a straight sided stoneware cylinder with a rounded shoulder and a short neck, fully assembled, with a textured ceramic surface that stays matt where the glaze is thin.

Where it works: a bedside table, a hallway console, or a console table in a living room, with a shade chosen to suit the room.

A wide drum shade suits this base well; the reactive glaze is the detail worth showing off, so avoid a shade that hides the shoulder.
