Malayer Wall Light

A thick fluted crystal shade on a half round brass plate, cut so the glass holds the light instead of passing it straight through.

The shade is the object here. It is clear cut crystal glass with deep vertical flutes on a rounded hexagonal body, heavy enough that the light bends inside it before it leaves, which is why the fitting glitters at the edges and stays soft in the middle. Behind it a half round brass backplate and a short arm hold the shade proud of the wall, and both are burnished rather than polished so the brass reads warm. The shade sits open at the top, so light goes up the wall as well as out, and the lamp inside is visible from below.

Where it works: at bedside height beside a bed, on a living room chimney breast, or as a pair either side of a bedroom mirror.

The shade is open at the top, so the lamp shows from certain angles. A warm filament tube looks right, a bright cool bulb does not.
