Chalus Flush Ceiling Light

A wide ellipse of open woven bamboo, painted white and fixed flat to the ceiling, that throws lattice shadows across the walls as soon as it is lit.

The weave is the whole design. Split bamboo is laid over a rounded former in an open diagonal lattice, so the shade holds a plump ellipse shape without any visible frame, and the gaps let as much light out sideways as down. Lit, that pattern lands on the ceiling and walls as a soft grid of shadow, which is a different effect from a solid shade and the reason to buy this one. Painted white, the bamboo keeps its texture but loses the yellow of raw cane, so it sits with pale walls rather than reading as a beach house piece. A matt gold disc and finial close the underside. It fixes flat to the ceiling, so it suits rooms without the height for a drop.

Where it works: a bedroom, a living room, or a hallway or landing with a low ceiling that will not take a pendant.
