A wide cone of cream cotton string on a white cable, hand wound so the light comes through in fine vertical lines.

The shade is built by winding cotton string over a frame, turn against turn, which leaves a ribbed surface and thin gaps that the light escapes through. Hung over a table it does two things at once: a warm glow through the weave at eye level, and a clean pool of light straight down through the open bottom. The top is cut on an angle rather than flat, so the shade tilts very slightly and the cable enters off centre. Hand winding means the tension varies, and no two shades are identical.

Where it works: over a dining table or a kitchen island, or low beside a bed in a bedroom in place of a bedside lamp.
