Jiroft Table Lamp

A tapered drum of cream cotton string over a wrapped cylindrical base, with an open gap between the two that lets the light out sideways.

Both parts are wound by hand in cotton string over an iron frame, turn beside turn, which leaves a fine ribbed surface and narrow gaps that the light comes through. Unlike the squat version of this lamp, the shade sits clear of the base on a visible frame, so light escapes from the underside as well as through the weave and the base glows on its own. The winding is done by hand, so the tension, the colour and the spacing all vary a little from one lamp to the next.

Where it works: a bedside table, a hallway console, or a landing table where a soft striped light is enough on its own.
