Arak Pendant Light

A flattened oval of smoked glass with deep vertical fluting, hung on an antique brass chain and lit from inside so every rib glows.

The shade is blown into a rounded ellipse, wider than it is tall, and pressed with broad flutes that run from the collar to the base like the segments of a melon. The glass is smoked to a warm grey brown, dense enough to soften the lamp inside into a glow rather than a point, and the flutes hold the light in bands so the shade reads as a lit object from across a room. The chain and collar are antique brass, dark enough not to fight the glass.

Where it works: over a dining table, above a kitchen island, or in a hallway where it hangs against a plain wall.
