A blown smoked grey glass teardrop base with a black lamp holder, ready to take a shade of your choosing.

Smoked glass does something clear glass cannot: it holds its colour when the lamp is off, so the base still reads as a dark sculptural object in daylight, then warms to a soft amber when a bulb is lit inside it. The form is a wide teardrop, blown by hand so the wall carries faint ripples, narrowing to a black metal collar and lamp holder at the top. Grey and black together keep it quiet enough to sit against almost any wall colour, and the flex has an in-line on off switch so the lamp is not switched at the socket.

Where it works: on a living room sideboard, a hallway console, or a bedroom chest where a dark base grounds a pale wall.

Budget for a shade too. A pale linen or woven shade lifts the smoked glass; a dark one will bury it.
