Sohrab Table Lamp

A sphere of natural alabaster sitting on a short cylinder of the same stone, lit from within so the veining shows only when it is on.

There is no metal and no fabric anywhere on this lamp. The globe is solid alabaster turned and hollowed until it is thin enough to pass light, and it rests on a plain cylindrical base cut from the same material. Unlit it is an off white stone object with faint grey markings. Lit, the veined stone glows in warm amber and brown and every piece looks different, because the pattern is geological rather than printed. The globe lifts off the base for lamp changes and the supplier warns that it is heavy, so it wants a stable surface.

Where it works: on a bedside table, on a hallway console, or on a living room shelf as a low warm light rather than a reading lamp.
