Natanz Table Lamp

A hand carved mango wood lamp base in a deep jet black, fluted around its belly and finished with a brass collar at the neck.

The shape is an urn: a narrow foot swelling out to a rounded body and drawing back in to a short neck. That body is carved into deep vertical flutes that catch a raking light and throw thin shadows down the sides, which is what stops a black lamp base from reading as a black blob in a corner. The wood is stained rather than painted, so the grain still shows through in the smooth areas at the shoulder and foot, and the small brass collar under the lamp holder is the only warm note on the whole piece. A cable with an in-line on off switch runs from the back.

Where it works: on a living room sideboard, a hallway console, or a bedroom chest where the fluting can be seen side on.

You will need a shade as well. Something pale and plain lets the fluting do the talking; a dark shade will swallow it.
