A rippled white stoneware base under a warm taupe cotton shade, the softer of the two shade options on the same lamp.

Same base, different mood. The stoneware is combed into loose horizontal ripples while the clay is soft, glazed white, and tapered from a wide foot to a narrow neck. Over it sits a taupe cotton shade on an iron frame, and that greyed beige is what changes the lamp: light through taupe cotton comes out warmer and lower in contrast than light through white, so it reads as a corner lamp for the evening rather than a bright one. A gold lamp holder joins the two, and the cable carries an in-line on off switch.

Where it works: on a living room sideboard, a bedroom chest of drawers, or a hallway console, next to timber, rattan and stone rather than in a pure white scheme.

The taupe shade warms the light noticeably. If you want the lamp to read as crisp white, take the white shaded version instead.
