Nain Pendant Light

A wide, low pendant in warm amber glass, cut into flat vertical facets and hung from a gold collar on a black flex.

The shade is a squat drum with the top and bottom edges cut back at an angle, so it catches light along two hard lines instead of one soft curve. The glass is transparent and tinted a pale champagne amber, which means the lamp inside stays visible: choose a filament bulb and you get a warm glowing centre and a scatter of amber reflections on the ceiling, choose an opal bulb and it settles down into a softer glow. The collar, stem and ceiling plate are a brushed gold, warm enough to sit with the glass rather than cut against it.

Where it works: singly over a bedroom corner, in a row above a kitchen island, or centred over a dining table where the amber tone reads warmest.

Because the glass is clear rather than opal, the bulb is part of the design. A plain LED globe will look wrong in it.
