Three slim black arms swing out from a central hub, each carrying a shallow cone shade with a white interior and a brass collar at the joint.

The arms are the design. Each one is pivoting at the hub and swivels again at the shade, so the fitting can be set with all three cones pointing down over a table or fanned outwards to bounce light off a ceiling. That range is unusual on a fixed ceiling light and it is what you are paying for. The shades are matt black outside and matt white inside, which stops the black reading as a hole in the ceiling and keeps the light warm as it reflects out. Brass collars mark each joint. The fitting hangs on a rigid rod and spans wide across the ceiling, so it belongs over a table or a long sofa rather than in a corridor.

Where it works: over a dining room table, above a long sofa in a living room, or in a home office where the arms can be aimed at a desk.
