A glazed oval body in grey marbled tones, set on a brass foot and stem, under a wide natural fabric drum shade that keeps the light soft and low.

The ceramic base is the piece: a smooth egg shape with grey and charcoal veining running through the glaze, so no two sit quite the same and the surface picks up reflections from the room. It stands on a round brass foot with a matching brass stem and collar, which lifts the mass off the table and stops it reading as heavy. The shade is a slightly tapered drum in a coarse natural fabric, open at both ends, so light spills up onto the wall as well as down onto whatever is beneath it. It is sized for a bedside table or a console rather than a small side table.

Where it works: a bedside table where the tapered shade keeps the glare off a book, a hallway console, or a living room sideboard in a pair.
