Zamasp Chandelier

A gold framed chandelier strung with hundreds of clear faceted beads, tapering from a narrow crown into a wide ring and closing in a shallow beaded bowl.

The construction is traditional even if the materials are not, and it is tiered rather than flat. Strands of clear faceted beads fall from a small top ring, flare outwards to a wide brass plated band at the waist, then gather again underneath into a shallow bowl finished with a turned finial. Lit from lamps hidden inside, the beads break the light into points and throw it back through every strand, which is the reason this shape has survived two centuries. The beads are plastic rather than glass, so they weigh little and they will not carry the same depth of refraction. The frame is brass plated metal in a warm gold, and it hangs on a chain of adjustable length.

Where it works: over a dining room table, in a stairwell where it is seen from below, or in a hallway with height to spare.
