A rounded ceramic urn in a chalky antique white, distressed so the darker body shows through at the high points, under a wide tapered linen shade.

The base is thrown as a full bellied urn with a short collared neck, and the surface is the reason to buy it: a matt chalk white laid over a darker ceramic body and then rubbed back, so the edges and the shoulder carry grey flecking and the whole thing looks like it has been on a table for thirty years. The shade is a tapered empire in natural linen, wide enough to balance the base and to spread the light into a broad soft pool rather than a spot. A switch sits on the cable rather than under the shade, so it is reachable without leaning across furniture.

Where it works: a bedroom on a chest of drawers, a hallway console table, or a living room sideboard where a wide shade will not overhang.
