Marvdasht Wall Light

A solid block of cut crystal with rough hewn faces, sitting on a short stem over a burnished brass round plate, lit from a small candle lamp inside.

This is a heavy piece of glass rather than a shade. The block is faceted, cut with deep irregular faces so light leaving the lamp inside is bent in several directions at once, which is why it reads as a small lantern rather than a diffuser. The supplier specifies K9 crystal, an optical glass that is clear enough to keep the cut edges crisp. Underneath, a short turned stem lifts the block clear of a plain round plate, so the fitting sits close to the wall and takes up very little projection. Light spills up and down as much as forward.

Where it works: as bedside lights either side of a bed, along a hallway, or in a small living room alcove where a projecting arm would be in the way.

Use a clear candle lamp. The crystal is cut to be looked through, and a frosted bulb kills the whole effect.
