Kerman Picture Light

A long matt black cylinder with a slot cut along its underside, carried on a pivoting arm off a small round wall plate.

The whole fitting is one turned tube with end caps, so from the front it reads as a clean horizontal line rather than a hood. The light leaves through a slot along the lower edge, and the inside of that slot is finished warm so the beam picks up a little colour on the way out. The arm is a flat yoke that pivots at the plate, which is what lets the tube rotate and square the beam onto whatever is hanging below it. Nothing about this is decorative for its own sake, and that restraint is what makes it work above a picture rather than competing with it.

Where it works: above a painting in a living room, along a hallway of framed prints, or over a shelf of objects that need a directed wash.
