An opal glass globe held out on a horizontal chrome arm above a weighted disc base, unmistakably a desk piece.

The arm is the idea: a slim chrome tube rises from a round base and turns a right angle at the top, carrying the glass out over the desk rather than sitting it directly above the base. That puts the light where you are working instead of behind it. The shade is opal glass, which diffuses rather than transmits, so the whole globe glows evenly and there is no hot spot where the lamp sits inside it. Everything else is chrome plated and polished bright, which keeps the lamp visually light despite the solid disc holding it down.

Where it works: on a home office desk, a bedside table, or a living room console where a small bright point of light is more useful than a broad one.
