Estahban Pendant Light

A clear glass sphere with an open bottom, hung from a slim brass stem on a black cord. Simple enough to run in a row without the ceiling looking busy.

The shade is a plain blown globe, open at the base so the lamp sits partly inside and partly below it. There is no frosting and no opal layer, so all the character comes from the bulb and from the way the glass edge catches light around its rim. Above it a slim brass stem lifts the shade clear of the cord, which keeps the proportions right when several are hung together. Because clear glass diffuses nothing, this is a fitting for decorative filament lamps and for positions where you are not looking straight up into it.

Where it works: in a row of two or three over a kitchen island, singly over a dining table, or in a hallway with reasonable ceiling height.
