A white cotton shade on an iron frame, the small size in a plain traditional shape.

White cotton is the brightest of the plain shades: it takes least out of the light passing through it, so the same bulb reads cooler and cleaner here than it would under a coloured cloth, and the room stays closer to daylight in the evening. That makes it the right choice over a dark base, where the contrast is the point, and the wrong one if you were hoping to warm a room down. The cloth is closely woven, so the lamp inside stays hidden rather than showing as a bright patch, and it is stretched over a rolled iron frame. It is a small shade for a bedside base.

Where it works: on a bedside lamp, a bedroom base, or a small hallway lamp where anything wider would overhang the surface.
