Two brass rings hung one below the other on black cords, each seated with clear glass spheres that sit half proud of the metal like planets on a track.

The construction is honest and simple: a wide lower ring and a narrower upper one, both flat brass bands, hung on fine black cords from a single brass canopy. Along each ring sit clear glass spheres, half sunk into shaped brass mounts so they read as orbs travelling around a rail rather than as shades hung from it. Lit, each sphere glows as a discrete warm point and the two tiers give the fitting depth from below and a genuine sense of scale and statement. The supplier describes a handmade brushed and burnished brass finish, which is why the metal has an antique warmth rather than a bright polish.

Where it works: over a large dining room table, in a stairwell where both tiers can be read at once, or in a double height living room.
