A stepped brass cylinder on a straight arm off a round wall plate, tilting so the beam can be dropped onto a book, a desk or a picture.

The shade is turned from brass in two steps, a narrow collar above a wider body that flares slightly at the open mouth, and that step is the only ornament on the fitting. It hangs off a straight brass arm from a plain round plate, and the joint behind the shade lets it swing so the angle can be set once and left. Because the mouth is open and undiffused, the beam is defined and useful rather than decorative, which makes this a genuine reading light rather than an accent. The brass is brushed and carries a varnish layer to hold the finish.

Where it works: a reading corner beside a chair, over a desk in a home office, or above a bedside table.
