Bukan Pendant Light

A flat plate of natural alabaster hung on a rigid matt black rod with a small bore through its centre.

The stone is worked into a shallow disc with a soft rolled edge and a hole through the middle where the rod passes through. Alabaster carries light rather than blocking it, so lit from above the whole plate glows and the natural veining reads as bands of warmer and cooler cloud across the face. Because the suspension is a rigid rod rather than a cord, the drop is set at manufacture and cannot be shortened at installation, which matters over a table. The metalwork is matt black in the photograph, though the supplier calls it bronze.

Where it works: over a dining table, above a kitchen island, or in a hallway where a low flat disc suits the ceiling height.
