Gudarz Floor Lamp

A floor lamp on a slim gold column, topped with a small fluted clear glass shade that throws light up and out.

The proportions are the appeal: a narrow gold tube rising from a small weighted disc, with the glass held right at the top so the light sits at standing head height rather than down at the arm of a chair. The shade is clear glass pressed into fine vertical flutes, which breaks the lit bulb into a ring of bright lines and scatters fine highlights onto the wall behind it. Because the glass is clear and open at the top, light goes upward as well as out, so it lifts a ceiling corner instead of just lighting the floor. The column is painted gold on steel, satin rather than mirrored.

Where it works: in a living room corner beside an armchair, in a reading corner, or at the end of a dining room where a table lamp has nowhere to stand.
