The same alabaster dome and stem in a near black finish rather than brass, which turns a warm fitting into a graphic one against a pale wall.

A plain rectangular backplate in near black, a straight stem, and a knurled collar holding a single alabaster shade. Against a light wall the black metal draws a hard vertical line and the stone reads as the only soft thing in the composition. Alabaster diffuses light through its whole thickness, so the dome glows evenly rather than showing a bright spot where the lamp sits, and the natural veining shows once it is lit. The supplier describes the metal as bronze, which the photograph does not support.

Where it works: as a bedside pair, down a hallway, or either side of a mirror in a living room.
