Iraj Floor Lamp

A wide tapered drum in a cotton and linen weave, carried on a thin black stem out of a heavy tapered concrete base that does all the work of holding it up.

The base is cast concrete with a rough unsealed surface, tapering from a narrow top out to a wide foot, and it is what makes the proportions work: a wide shade at head height on a stem this thin would look precarious on anything lighter. The concrete reads near black rather than grey, so it holds its own against a dark floor. The shade is 70% cotton and 30% linen in an undyed natural colour, wide at the base and drawn in at the top, and it tilts on its fitting so you can angle the light towards a chair. A toggle switch sits on the textile cable.

Where it works: beside a sofa in a living room, over a chair in a reading corner, or in a bedroom as the corner light.

This is a soft ambient light rather than a strong reading light. Choose a warm white lamp to suit the natural shade.
