An arched antique brass stem with a dome shade that tips on its knuckle, so the light lands where you point it instead of washing the whole room.

The arched stem is a single piece of steel bent in one shallow curve and plated in an antique brass that has been brushed back, so it reads warm and matt rather than shiny. The shade is a pressed metal dome with a pale painted interior that bounces the light down in a tight pool, and the adjustable head pivots at the top of the arch so you can aim it at a book or throw it against a wall. A switch sits on the weighted base, within reach on a desk. It lights a work surface without leaning into your eyeline.

Where it works: on a home office desk, on a bedside table where the head can be turned towards a book, or on a hallway console.

The open dome sits close enough to the eye that a clear lamp will glare if you sit under it, so choose a soft warm one.
