A clear glass cone plated straight onto the ceiling with no drop at all, and a large filament globe hanging in the middle of it in plain view.

This is about as simple as a ceiling fitting gets. A round burnished brass plate goes flat against the ceiling, a short knurled holder comes down from it, and a clear glass cone flares out around the lamp. Because the glass is clear it does nothing to the light and everything to the look, so the lamp you choose is the design decision here. Burnished brass is a live finish that warms and deepens with age, and the supplier states an oil varnish is applied over it to slow that down.

Where it works: a hallway, a landing, or any low ceiling where a pendant would be in the way.
