A clear ribbed glass capsule on a polished gold disc, warm at the bottom and colourless above it.

Clear glass and warm metal is the easiest of these combinations to place, because the only colour in the lamp comes from the bulb and the base. The shade is a ribbed cylinder, pressed in fine vertical ribs from shoulder to foot and left open at the top, so the lamp inside is visible and the ribs stretch its light into a column of bright lines. The base is a low, compact disc in a polished gold finish, and it throws a little warmth back up into the bottom of the glass, which is what stops a clear lamp from looking clinical, all on a genuinely compact scale.

Where it works: on a hallway shelf, a home office desk, or a bedroom side table where a small transparent lamp keeps the surface uncluttered.
