Twelve alabaster panels stood side by side in a drum, bracketed top and bottom in burnished brass, so the whole band glows and the brackets read as punctuation.

Each panel is a slab of alabaster with its corners cut away, and every one is held at the top and the bottom by a small brass mount, which is what gives the drum its repeated rhythm. The supplier states the mounts are stainless steel finished in burnished brass rather than solid brass, chosen for strength at this diameter. Alabaster passes light through its whole thickness, so the drum reads as a single backlit band rather than showing twelve bright edges, and the veining in each panel is different, which is what stops it looking manufactured.

Where it works: over a dining room table, or centred in a living room where the drum can be seen from the side rather than from below.
