Zarasp Floor Lamp

A slim stem that runs straight up and then arches right over, holding a bell of smoked glass out beyond the base and down over a chair.

The glass is tinted a warm smoke, dense enough to take the glare off a filament lamp but clear enough to leave the bulb visible as a soft amber core. The shade is blown as a bell, wide at the bottom and drawn into a narrow neck, and the holder it hangs from can be adjusted, so the light can be aimed rather than left to fall straight down. The frame is a brushed metal in a pale brass tone with a matt finish, on a shallow round base that keeps the lamp upright and stable. It reaches forward well beyond the base.

Where it works: over an armchair in a living room, in a reading corner, or beside a bed in a bedroom where the arch can reach across without moving the furniture.

A clear filament lamp suits smoked glass better than an opal one does. Do settle the finish question first: the written description and the photograph do not agree.
