A slab of natural travertine on the wall, a slim brass rod running down its face, and a wide tapered linen cone sitting on top of it, throwing light up and down the wall.

The backplate is the piece worth buying: a rectangle of travertine with softly rounded corners and the open pitting the stone is known for, so it reads as a piece of material rather than as a fixing plate. A brass rod runs down the centre of it and is held by a small crossbar, and that rod is the whole arm, carrying the lamp holder up into the shade. The shade is a tapered cone in a warm natural linen, wide at the base and open at both ends, which puts a bright triangle of light on the wall above and a soft pool below. Stone, brass and linen together keep the colour warm without any of it going yellow.

Where it works: flanking a bed as a bedside pair, either side of a mirror, along a hallway, or on a living room chimney breast.
