Seven bare lamps on brass holders, set at the ends of matt black rods that cross a central column at three different heights and swivel to wherever you want them.

This is a fitting with nothing to hide behind. The rods are powder coated matt black and hold the lamps well away from the centre, so the shape you see is a sputnik of thin lines with points of light at the ends. Each holder is brass plated, which puts a warm collar under every lamp and stops the black from reading as flat. The arms pivot horizontally on their own, so the frame can be spread wide and even or gathered to one side. Because the lamps are exposed, the bulb you choose is the design: a clear filament globe is what the photograph shows.

Where it works: over a dining room table, in a living room, or down a stairwell where the arms can be seen from more than one angle.

Budget for the bulbs. Seven clear filament globes will cost a meaningful fraction of the fitting and without them it is seven empty sockets.
