Rostam Lamp Shade

A wide woven disc in a soft terracotta cord, pressed into a shallow wave so the rim lifts and falls like a leaf. It is a shade, not a complete light.

The cord is wound over a fine wire frame in rays running out from the centre, and the frame is shaped so that the edge rises on two sides and dips on the other two, which is what gives the piece its wave. Light escapes between the windings as much as it falls through the open bottom, so the shade glows all over and casts a fine striped shadow onto the ceiling. It is a wide, shallow form, which suits a low hung position over a table where the underside is not looked at directly.

Where it works: over a dining table, in a living room, or above a reading corner chair, hung low enough that the lamp is not in view.
