A tall alabaster panel with a rounded foot, set forward and off centre against a shorter burnished brass backplate.

The composition is two rectangles that refuse to line up. The brass backplate is short and square edged, the alabaster panel is taller, rounded at the bottom and pushed to one side, and the gap between them is what the design is about. Light comes out through the stone rather than around it, so the panel glows evenly and its veining shows as soft cloud, while the brass behind picks up a warm reflection off the wall. Burnished brass is a live finish and will deepen over the years rather than staying bright.

Where it works: as a bedside pair, along a hallway, or in a living room where a pair reads better than a single.
