Eight clear glass cones stood upright around a flat brass ring, open at the top, with the lamps visible inside every one of them.

The ring is a plain flat band of antique brass and the shades sit on top of it rather than hanging beneath, which is what gives this its upward, candle like read from across a room. Each shade is a clear glass cone, wider at the top than the bottom and open, so light leaves upward as well as sideways and there is no diffusion at all. That makes the lamp choice matter: a clear filament lamp will read as eight bright points, an opal one will read as eight soft ones. Suspension is on black cables from a brass canopy.

Where it works: over a dining room table, above a kitchen island, or centred in a living room.

Eight visible lamps have to match. Buy them as a set and keep a spare from the same batch.
