Three ribbed opal glass shades, each a different shape and hung at a different height, gathered on black flexes under one canopy.

The shades are what carry this: a tall cylinder, a wide squat oval and a smaller barrel, each moulded with fine vertical ribs that catch the light along their length. All three are opal glass, so the lamps stay hidden and the ribbing reads as texture rather than as a pattern of bright lines. Each hangs from a brass plated cylinder holder on a black textile flex, cut to different lengths so the shades sit at staggered heights rather than in a line.

Where it works: over a dining table, in a stairwell where the staggered drops can be seen from below, or in a living room corner.

Worth being plain about: the shades are white, not coloured, whatever the supplier's own copy suggests. Expect a gentle decorative glow rather than a strong single light source.
