Chegeni Wall Light

A pleated raffia cone on a curved steel arm that comes out of a round wall plate in an S, throwing light up the wall and down over it.

The arm is the design. A flat steel bar leaves the wall plate low, bends forward and rises again to hold the shade clear of the wall, so the fitting reads as a line drawn on the plaster rather than a box bolted to it. The shade is raffia, pleated and gathered onto a small cone frame, and the fibre lets the light through warm and uneven while the open top and bottom throw two soft pools onto the wall. Against a plain wall that pattern is most of what the fitting gives you, so it wants a surface worth lighting. It projects out from a compact wall plate.

Where it works: as a bedside pair either side of a bed, along a living room chimney breast, or in a hallway where a shade at head height has to be soft.

Two things to settle before ordering: whether it arrives with a cable or has to be wired into the wall, and the wattage ceiling. The supplier publishes neither.
