Shaqayeq Wall Light

Two flat slabs of natural alabaster stacked one above the other and clamped by a single matt black band, so the light escapes from the top and bottom edges.

Alabaster is dense enough to block a lamp and thin enough at this thickness to let some of it through, so the slabs glow softly across the face while the strongest light spills upward and downward past the black band. Each panel carries its own veining, cloudy grey through white, which only becomes visible once the lamp is on. The metal band is matt black and does the structural work, holding both slabs and hiding the fixings, which is why the fitting reads as two floating pieces of stone rather than a boxed shade.

Where it works: along a hallway, up a landing wall in a stack, or in a bedroom beside the bed where a low glow is wanted rather than a reading light.
