Shirin Floor Lamp

A tall glossy black column with a domed metal cap sitting on top of it, so the lamp reads as one solid piece rather than a shade on a stand.

The base is a straight cylinder in high gloss black that runs almost the full height, and the shade is a plain hemisphere set directly on it with only a short neck between them. Both are powder coated metal, and the gloss is what carries the Mid-Century reference from the 1970s: it picks up long highlights down the length of the column and around the curve of the dome. The inside of the shade is painted white, so the light that leaves it is bounced rather than absorbed, and because the metal is opaque all of it goes downward onto the floor.

Where it works: in a living room beside a sofa, in a reading corner, or in a bedroom as a floor standing accent.

Read the colour twice before ordering: this lamp is glossy black, not white, whatever the supplier's title says. Only the lining of the shade is white.
