Mahabad Flush Ceiling Light

A wide ellipse of ribbed rice paper pressed flat to the ceiling, on a pale ash wood frame that shows through the paper when it is lit.

Rice paper over a ribbed former gives an even, low-contrast glow with no visible hot spot, which is what makes this work in a room with a low ceiling where a hanging fitting would be in the way. The ellipse reads as a shape on the ceiling rather than an object under it, wide but shallow in profile. The ash wood spine and the matt white canopy are the only hard elements. Because the paper is a natural material, no two shades take the light in quite the same way. The silhouette reads as quietly Scandinavian in style.

Where it works: a bedroom, a landing, or any low ceiling room where a pendant would sit in head height.

Paper is the whole point and also the caveat: it marks, it cannot be cleaned, and it should stay out of kitchens and steam.
