A smoked grey ribbed glass capsule on a polished gold disc, the warmest way to use a cool grey glass.

Grey glass on gold is a deliberately mismatched pairing and it is the most interesting of the three. The base reflects a warm cast up into the bottom of the shade, so the smoke reads brown at the foot and neutral grey at the shoulder, and the lamp changes character depending on which end you are looking at. The glass is pressed into fine vertical ribs, open at the top, and it takes the hard edge off the bulb so the light comes out soft and amber. The disc base is polished gold with an in-line switch.

Where it works: on a living room side table, a hallway console, or a bedroom chest in a room that already has brass or timber in it.

A warm filament bulb is the right choice here. Cool white light behind smoked glass goes flat and grey very quickly.
