Laajevard Pendant Light

A squat ellipse of natural alabaster, wider than it is tall, hung on a fine wire from a small brass canopy with the underside left open.

The stone is hollowed until the wall is thin enough to pass light, so the whole shade glows and the cloudy veining that runs through the alabaster only appears when the lamp is on. The shape is flattened rather than round, which pushes more of the light sideways and down than a globe would, and the recessed opening at the base lets a stronger pool fall directly beneath it. The canopy and fittings are brass and the suspension is a fine wire, so nothing distracts from the stone.

Where it works: low over a dining table, in a bedroom as a single central fitting, or in a living room corner where a soft glow is enough.
